Post Disclosing Site Startup Costs To Members

First let me just say that after 4 years of doing PTR, there's not much anymore that makes me go "uhh, wow" but I had to bring this up. I was reading over at GPF and in one of the multi-page threads someone posted an admin mail where the PO basically told members how much it cost them to startup the site and that they hope "it will be worth it".

I feel this is highly inappropriate for a PO of any GPT site to do, whether its a PTR, survey site, or rewards program. My reasoning is this, I don't feel it should matter to the members what is spent to start the site, especially telling them in an indirect way "you better support me by covering these costs". We already know PO's spend money, but personally I'm not interested in how much that is.

Private discussion outside the site - or say in private, is one thing, but in a admin message to ALL members to me is appaling. PO's, would you do this?

I am kind of mixed on this one.

To send that information and as you said tell people in an indirect way that the costs should be covered is, to me, just plain tacky.

On the other hand, if more people knew the true start up costs, maybe we would have less starting programs without a clue as to what all is entailed. But to do so in an Admin, that is just plain tacky and not very good business sense.  Says a lot of where this program is eventually headed and who will be to blame for probably most everything.

It, by far, is cheaper to start up a site today compared to five - six years ago.  The cost has been cut by oh at least 3/4. Makes one wonder, if the cost was what it was, would there be so many new programs to come and go.

Sorry got a bit off topic there.  IMO, this is one to steer clear from.  If the po is going to make insinuations of that nature right out of the gate, its bound to get more interesting than its worth later on.
